Happy New Year!
It’s Valerie from music musings — how’s your 2025 going? 🥳
It’s been a while since I started my music newsletter on Beehiiv, but I feel like I’ve written more frequently in the past few months than I’ve ever written on my old blogs. I think it’s wonderful though, that I finally found a sweet spot where I can write for hours on end.
While I can't say that I'll be as active in this Substack as on Beehiiv, I hope I can at least use this space to document my journey with this passion project, along with other musical reflections I've had as a storyteller who is finally embracing her true life calling in the musical arts.
It’s partly why I named this Substack minutes, because I want to turn this into a music journal of sorts I can look back on. The other reason would be its musical definition: succinct and precise, like the minutes in a time signature.
And since we’re in the business of introductions, allow me to introduce myself :)
I come from a multicultural background, being a Filipino raised in Singapore. I'm fortunate to have come from a big family where both sides are big music fans who enjoy listening and vibing along to great music (trust me when I say Filipinos are big on karaoke), so much that my cousins and I are the first musically inclined generation in our family.
My dad also keeps a treasure trove of 50s and 60s music that he heard as a young boy, while watching his father listen to them on the radio. These records, among many other inspirations and cultural experiences, introduced me to several genres of modern music while I was growing up.
Whenever I’m not in office, doing sports or socialising outside, you’ll find me with my little keyboard, finding new ways to express myself through music. You could definitely say that music is a big part of my life, and music is the art that I live by.
I've had a very interesting creative and musical life trajectory over the past couple of years, and I can't wait to share more about it in the coming blogs, infused with the music that got me through every era.
In the meantime, I’d love for you to check out my music newsletter on Beehiiv — I’ll be dropping the next volume tomorrow, so stay tuned (pun intended)!
See you in my next musing ✨
Cheers,
Val ♫
